Burum are a dynamic jazz-folk group from Wales that play new, fresh interpretations of traditional Welsh melodies.
The band’s repertoire is drawn from Welsh traditional music, adapted and re-imagined for a modern jazz sextet. Burum’s music fuses a deep respect for the original folk melodies themselves with the flexibility and dynamics of jazz improvisation.
Led by award winning trumpeter Tomos Williams, and his brother Daniel on sax, the addition of widely respected folk musician Ceri Rhys Matthews (on pipes and wooden flute) to a rhythm section comprising some of the best players on the Welsh jazz scene – Dave Jones (piano), Aidan Thorne (bass), Mark O Connor (drums) – creates the unique band sound that is ‘Burum’.
Burum have played at numerous international music festivals: Festival Interceltique, Lorient , Brittany, France (2013), The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Washington DC, USA (2009) and the International Brecon Jazz Festival (2008), and have toured Wales twice (2012, 2008).
Burum have also collaborated with musicians of international repute: flautist Jean-Michel Veillon from Brittany (2012, 2013), triple-harpist Llio Rhydderch from Wales (2008), and guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly from USA based in Germany (2007).
