Since graduating from college in Newcastle Upon Tyne with a degree in Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music, Lowri has been constantly and steadily gathering a fan base, gigging across the country and recording an impressive back catalogue of CD’s.
Since meeting in 2005 Lowri and Lee have worked tirelessly as a duo to create and develop their musical sound. They have 10 years experience writing, recording, producing and performing music together as a unit and their musical presence as a duo is firmly established within the music scene. Performing an average of 50 shows a year, appear on S4C programmes on a regular basis and their music is regularly played on BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio Wales. BBC Radio Cymru has twice commissioned them to write, produce and record songs for specific programmes in their schedule.
A chance meeting with Wyn Jones of Fflach Recording Company in 2005 led to the recording of Lowri’s first Welsh language album (Clyw Sibrydion) which was released on their RASP label in the summer of 2006. Songs were soon being played regularly on Radio Cymru and also picked up by BBC Radio Wales presenter Frank Hennessy who is now a big fan of their work.
On the back of the success of Clyw Sibrydion, Lowri and Lee were very keen to release an English language album. ‘Kick the Sand’ was released in 2007 on the Fflach label. The album was officially launched at a gig in the Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay in July 2007. This album brought their music to a much wider audience and was soon hitting the airwaves across the world, being played in America, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Iceland and Ireland, receiving great reviews and selling well in shops and gigs.
Lowri released one further Welsh language E.P. “Dim da Maria” in 2008 on Fflach records before starting to release music on their record label Shimi Records in late 2008. The first Shimi release was “Dagre yn y eira” a Christmas single in December 2008. This was followed in 2009 a second English language album “One way ticket” alongside a Welsh language EP “Disgleiro”.
The bilingual album ‘Dydd a nos’ (Day and night) was released on record company Sain’s ‘Rasal’ label in 2011, tracks from which have achieved record of the week and made the playlist on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.
Lowri has gained greater UK wide recognition with the 3rd and most recent English language album ‘Corner of my eye’ which features Accordion player Andy Cutting and renowned acoustic and slide guitarist Martin Simpson, both BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winners. The album has received fantastic reviews with a 5* review from Rock ‘n’ Reel (R2) quoting – Lowri Evans has surely cut one of the albums of this or any other year. It’s simply a dream. Both singles released from the album have been play listed by the BBC and have had a number of plays on BBC Radio 2. In June 2014 Lowri and her band were invited to record a session for legendary DJ/television presenter Bob Harris.
Released in August 2014 “Gadael y gorffennol (Leaving the past)” is a six track Welsh language EP. The single and title track “Gadael y gorffennol” was released prior to the EP and immediately made record of the week on BBC Radio Cymru in June 2014 and once again in August 2014.
Since 2006, Lowri and Lee performed at many UK festivals – these include Wychwood Festival, Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, The Acoustic Festival of Britain, The Small Nations Festival, Broadstairs Folk Festival, Llangollen Fringe, Pontardawe Festival, Priddy Folk Festival. We have also supported Cara Dillon, Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting, Richie Havens, Jez Lowe, Jim Moray, Findlay Brown, Cerys Matthews, and played in venues across the UK including Clwb Ifor Bach, Wales Millennium Centre and University of Wales in Cardiff, The Queens Hall in Narberth, The Prom in Bristol, The Troubadour Club and The Bedford in London, The Talbot in Tregaron.
They have performed live radio sessions for Frank Hennessy, Roy Noble, Alan Thompson, Lyn Bowles, Jamie Owen and Eleri Sion on BBC Radio Wales, and with Richard Rees, Shan Cothi, Lisa Gwilym and Nia Roberts on BBC Radio Cymru.
They have been appearing and performing regularly on S4C television shows including Heno, Bandit, Nodyn, Noson Lawen since releasing “Clyw Sibrydion” in 2006.
In 2010, they appeared at the “Celtic Connections” Festival in Glasgow, performed once again in the final of “Can i Gymru” (Song for Wales), appeared at the Green Man Festival, Crawley Folk Festival and Lowri was also shortlisted for the Best Female Welsh Artist of the Year 2010.
Lowri and Lee recorded a version of the Welsh language folk song “Tra bo dau” in late 2013 for 2 part S4C television show and film “Y Ffwrnes Gerdd”. The programme, produced by Ffilmiau’r Ffwrnes featured a wide variety of styles and performances by different performers in the beguiling atmosphere of the Ffwrn café and restaurant at Fishguard, Pembrokeshire. The film version won a commendation award at the 4th International Folk Music Film Festival at Kathmandu, for best long film.
In April 2014 Lowri and Lee did their first tour of America, playing venues in Chicago, Elkhart and Madison in Indiana and Nashville where we were very well received and have accepted invitations to return in 2015 to play further concerts, festivals and radio shows.
In June 2014 Lowri and her band were invited to Bob Harris’s (BBC Radio 2) house to record a session for his ‘Under the apple tree’ sessions.
In 2016, Lowri released ‘Everyone is from somewhere else’ which was produced by Mason Neely. The album was promoted by an UK tour and received critical acclaim from UK magazine reviews.
2017 saw Lowri release a ‘live’ album ‘A little bit of everything’ along with her long term partner and guitarist Lee Mason. The album celebrates 10 years since the release of the 1st album and is a selection of Welsh and English songs showcasing their best songs.
Lowri has collaborated with many songwriters, including Henry Priestman, Tom McRae, Michelle Stodart (The Magic Numbers), Marry Waterson, Sam Genders.
June 2018 will see Lowri release a new Welsh EP ‘Yr un hen gi’
