Tŷhai – Indo Celtic Trio
In this exciting collaboration between three Wales-based musicians, Indian vocalist, Rajesh David and Pete Stacey (saxophone and flute), are joined by guitar virtuoso, Dylan Fowler in a musical adventure that travels from the airs and dance melodies of Wales and the Celtic world to the ragas and rhythms of India.
Dylan Fowler has been a professional musician now for close on 30 years and in that time he has been active in many areas of music as a performer/ composer and arranger. He specializes in the traditional Celtic music of Wales. His musical palette draws on his experiences in contemporary European jazz, traditional music from the Celtic diaspora – particularly his Welsh heritage. He has worked extensively in the fields of jazz, folk and world music and has become an international soloist.
Saxophonist, Pete Stacey, has collaborated with a number of leading Indian classical musicians, including the legendary flautist, Hariprasad Chaurasia, for whom he composed an award-nominated concerto, and the eminent sitarist, Nishat Khan, for whom he developed, arranged and orchestrated a concerto which received its premiere in the Proms of 2013. Born into a family of singers in India, where he was an A-graded artist for All-India Radio and Television, Rajesh David is a lyrical singer with a fertile musical imagination. As a singer in Tŷhai he bridges the music and culture of the Celtic world and India: singing in Hindi, Sanskrit, English and even Welsh, as well as the musical language of sargams, taranas and bols.
Tŷhai began as a research project funded by the Arts Council and since then, the trio has been playing in venues all over Wales such as Theatr Ffwrnes, Llanelli, Beyond the Borders International Festival, Theatr Twn o’r Nant, Denbigh, Theatr Lyric, Carmarthen, Melville Centre, Abergavenny, Small World Theatre, Cardigan, and many others as well touring with the NRTF. Audience response has been warm and feedback excellent.
Tŷhai’s repertoire includes the ragas and rhythms of Indian music, verses from Sufi poetry and ancient Sanskrit texts as well as Welsh traditional music and song. Audiences will be delighted, amazed and enchanted by this unique blend of melody and rhythm from two cultures.
